Around the periplus of the Pietra

This is definitely the shortest loop. It is only 15 km long and you only have 100 m of ascent/descent, so the loop can be enjoyed not just by cyclists (on road bikes or MTB) but also those on foot (running, walking, jogging), in line skates or roller skis.
The itinerary is not particularly difficult and is a great chance to see the Pietra di Bismantova from all angles as well as some wonderful views of the mountains and the River Secchia valley.
The Pietra di Bismantova shatters the mellow profile of the mid Apennines here in Emilia with the visual arrogance of one of the best known “rocks” in the world, an astonishing combination that holds the promise of gusto and comfort, a seductive combination for many different types of visitors and lovers of outdoor sports. It is popular with families who are happy to simply admire it from the bottom, but it also attracts some of the most intrepid rock climbers in Italy. It has several climbing routes with varying levels of difficulty. The Pietra has the extra appeal of its links to events in history and literature, the old Byzantine castle that once stood on the top and the verses by Dante where he compares it to Mount Purgatorio.
